IBM's Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.) Processor

The CodecSys HDCP utilizes IBM Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.) multi-core technology.  The Cell/B.E. supplies CodecSys with supercharged processing speed, enabling standard codecs to deliver results that far exceed standard performance.

The nine core Cell Broadband Engine has a central processor known as the Power Processing Element (PPE), which runs the operating system, administers system resources and manages the eight co-processors known as Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs).  The SPEs process data and code quickly and efficiently, with 25.6 GFLOPS of single precision performance per SPE.

The resulting increase in processing power makes it possible for CodecSys to perform the mathematically intensive task of compressing and encoding HD video streams in real time, while allowing for a thirty to forty percent compression gain over current industry standard DSP or ASIC based H.264 encoders.

The Cell Broadband Engine architecture provides true multi-core parallel processing, backed by IBM’s record of innovation, system interoperability, and support.
